SEAALAS Awards and Criteria 

Why Should I Nominate? 

Acknowledge appreciation for the hard work, dedication and care shown in the field of Laboratory Animal Science. Nominate Employees, Co-Workers, Friends, Mentors, Trainers, Fellow SEAALAS Members, Supervisors, Vet Techs, Managers, or Veterinarians!  

 

How Do I Nominate Someone or Apply? 

Nomination packets should include a nomination letter and any additional supporting letters. Criteria and
eligibility requirements are outlined below. Individual awards may require specific documentation to be eligible for that award. All nominations are due by the deadline outlined below and must be postmarked or time stamped to be eligible. Incomplete or late submissions will be disqualified.

Award nomination packets for the 2023 SEAALAS Awards should be sent to the attention of the SEAALAS Awards Chair at torres@musc.edu 

BioServ Animal Welfare Award           Deadline: January 19, 2024 

This award is sponsored by Bio-Serv and consists of a plaque and a $200 honorarium.
The Award is presented annually to a person who has exhibited a positive impact to enrich, enhance, and/or improve the lives of animals, or the environment they work in regards to animal welfare. 

Criteria for this award:

  • Has enriched the life's of the animals they work with.
  • Has enhanced the living environment for the animal colonies they work
    with.
  • Has positively impacted research and the morale of the animal care
    staff with improvements
  • Has displayed the 3R's (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement) in their
    plan for Enhancement and Improvement.
  • Has reduced or eliminated distress or created other benefits for the
    animals they work with.

Qualifications:

  • A person within the SEAALAS branch must nominate the candidate.
  • The person nominated must be a member of SEAALAS.

Charles River Laboratory Linda Hazel Memorial Award   Deadline: Jan 19, 2024This award is sponsored by Charles River Laboratories and consists of a $200 honorarium and a plaque. Those eligible for the award include supervisors in the field of laboratory animal care/research; administrative/office staff; managerial staff and laboratory technicians.

Criteria for nomination are:

1. Minimum duration of employment within the field of laboratory animal science of 10 years.
2. Has consistently worked to promulgate investigator satisfaction while promoting animal welfare and maintaining         regulatory/institutional compliance.
3. Innovative approaches to job related duties should be cited.
4. All considerations being equal, candidates having current membership with the local AALAS Brach or National AALAS will be given priority.
5. All considerations being equal, candidates having current AALAS certification(s) will be given priority.

 Clinton S. Smith Scholarship Award                          Deadline: January 19, 2024

This scholarship provides the recipient with funds to support college study toward an associate, bachelors, masters, or doctorate degree related to a career in Animal Science. The scholarship may be awarded annually to a qualified applicant at a minimum funding level of $500.00. Interest generated by this fund and SEAALAS operating monies (if necessary) will provide the scholarship.

Criteria for this scholarship:

1) Applicants must submit a scholarship application and required documents to Awards Chair.
2) Qualification and evaluation criteria shall include, but not be limited to these factors: 

a. Education and career objectives
b. Activity in SEAALAS.
c. Proof of acceptance or enrollment in an approved institution: Education plan or program; and Academic achievement.               

3) The recipient of the Scholarship should be present at the ceremony to receive the award, unless the Executive Committee approves absence.

The Inotiv Sponsored John Duktig Leadership Award             Deadline: January 19, 2024 

This award is sponsored by SEAALAS in the memory of John Duktig. This award will be given at the annual meeting at the awards banquet.

Criteria:

  • SEAALAS Member
  • Demonstrated commitment to obtaining and promoting training for self and other staff
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills
  • Involved in the coordination of an innovative staff training and development program
  • Commitment to enhancing animal welfare

Award:

  • Plaque
  • 1 Year membership to LAWTE
  • 1 Year membership to LAMA (if a supervisor) -or- AALAS Membership (if not a supervisor)
  • 1 Year membership to SEAALAS
  • Opportunity to attend AALAS Leadership Program as SEAALAS's nominee (if attending National AALAS meeting, funded by home institution)
  • Member of the selection committee for the next year's award

Priority One Services Trainer Award   Deadline: January 19, 2024

This award is sponsored by Priority One Services, Inc. and consists of a $400 honorarium and a plaque. The individual selected shall be a person whose duties and responsibilities include providing training for individuals that have contact with animals and provide husbandry and technical animal care.

The following award qualifications will be considered in the final selection:
1. Number of years as a member of SEAALAS
2. Level of AALAS certification
3. Years of experience as a trainer
4. Years of experience in the lab animal field
5. History of lectures, workshops, and presentations (to include trade meetings
6. Ability to provide effective up-to-date training information and techniques
7. Ability to train diversified groups of people
8. Promotes and teaches individuals for AALAS certification
9. Membership and involvement in other organizations such as LAWTE and LATA

Purina Lab Diet Technician Award       Deadline: January 19, 2024  

This award will consist of a plaque and a $300 honorarium to be presented each year to a person whose primary responsibility is the husbandry (feeding, handling) of laboratory animals. Purina will donate an additional $50 to the AALAS Foundation in the award recipient's name.
Criteria for nomination are as follows:

  1. Daily contact with animals of one or more species in the form of handling, feeding, watering, changing bedding, etc.
  2. Demonstrates a positive attitude toward the welfare of animals.
  3. Demonstrates performance in completing animal care related duties as well as or better than the expected level of performance for the facility.
  4. Demonstrates pursuit of knowledge in the field of animal care (i.e. any course work or formal training).
  5. Innovative approaches to animal husbandry related problems should be cited.
  6. All considerations being equal, candidates having current membership with the local AALAS Branch or National AALAS will be given priority.

NOTE: Supervisory responsibility and formal degrees are not important considerations for this award.

Sally Newell Papp Member Participation Award Deadline: Jan 19, 2024This award will consist of a plaque and a minimum of a $300 honorarium to be presented yearly to the SEAALAS member deemed most active in the local, regional, and national organization.

Nominations should include a written description of accomplishments and letters of reference.

SEAALAS Travel Awards                  Deadline: January 19, 2024

This award allows the recipient to attend the SEAALAS Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet or the District IV meeting. SEAALAS will pay for meeting registration and hotel, and a stipend ($50.00) will be given to the award recipient. Up to three (3) awards may be given annually.

Criteria for nomination areas follows:
1) Submission of completed application and statement explaining why they want to attend meeting.

2) Submission of letter of recommendation from a Supervisor or Manager. This includes but is not limited to a PI, Attending Veterinarian, Floor Supervisor or Director.

3) Applicant must actively participate in meeting. Examples:

  • Present a Tech Talk
  • Present a Scientific
  • Volunteer to be a Facilitator/Moderator for Meeting Program
  • Judge Tech Talks
  • Volunteer on the Program Committee

4) All considerations being equal, candidates having never attended a SEAALAS/District IV meeting and/or candidates willing to present a Tech Talk will be given priority.

5) Candidate must be a SEAALAS member.

6) Award recipient(s) will be given recognition in the form of a certificate and a “goody” bag at the SEAALAS or District IV Awards Banquet.

SEAALAS Technician of the Year Award   Deadline: January 19, 2024

This award will consist of a plaque and a minimum of a $500 honorarium to be presented to one SEAALAS member each year for outstanding accomplishments in the field of animal care, research and/or technical education.
Nominations should include a written description of accomplishments and letters of reference.

Technician Presentation Award 3rd Place 

The Technician Presentation Awards for 1st through 3rd places will be judged during the "Tech Talk" portion of the annual conference. The presenter will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5 with a score of 1 being average and a score of 5 being substantially above average. The presenter will be judged in the following categories:

  • Presentation Technique
  • Clarity of Presentation
  • Effective Use of Visual Aids
  • Organization of Presentation
  • Originality/Creativity

Award Winners will receive a certificate and the following monetary awards:

1st Place: 100.00 check and a certificate

2nd Place: 75.00 check and a certificate

3rd Place: 50.00 check and a certificate
